Most common complications for piercings come from abuse and neglect:

Abuse:

Constant hitting, spinning, snagging, and introduction of foreign products/fluids

Neglect:

Not cleaning your piercing often or thoroughly enough
Downsizing and avoiding touching your jewelry will give you the best chance of avoiding damage

Oral Piercings

What to Use

Clean water. Just drink lots of water. Rinse with water.

What to Do

Gently rinse with water multiple times a day, especially after eating.

Drink lots of water!

If you smoke or drink alcohol, try to cut back. Smoking can contribute to more swelling and drinking can contribute to the death of healthy cells.

If it irritates a paper cut, it will irritate a fresh piercing in your mouth and should be avoided for the first four weeks.

AVOID:

Foods that are salty, spicy, citrusy, acidic, or crunchy.

No chewing gum, sticky taffy, mak ing out, and oral sex.

Keep others’ bodily fluids away from it.

PLEASE NOTE:

Tooth and gum damage can occur with oral piercings

Navel + Nipple Piercings

What To Use

Use a gentle soap with no added fragrance or dyes

What To Do

Wash your hands, bring the soap to a lather, then gently wash the piercing.

Rinse them thoroughly and gently in the shower

*For navels, blow-dry your piercing on the COOL setting for 30 seconds after washing

Four Rules

1.

Clean your piercing EVERY day

2.

Don’t touch your piercing unless you’re cleaning it and have clean hands

3.

DO NOT let anyone besides your piercer touch your piercing

4.

Schedule a follow-up appointment roughly 6 weeks after your piercing

If you notice swelling, irritation, or a bump forming on your piercing, contact your piercer right away and they will make sure you are taken care of.
